Aftermath: A Discussion on the

Effects of Marijuana Legalization

-Matt Stoneberger

With the legalization of recreational marijuana in Colorado in 2013, Colorado became ground zero for the recreational, medicinal and black market marijuana movement. Despite
the guarantees the marijuana black market would disappear, Colorado is battling the largest organized crime explosion in state history. This presentation is a sad, but humorous ride
through the complex set of circumstances which led to marijuana legalization, the legal statuses of marijuana today, and how it has changed the State of Colorado and its
criminal justice system’s approach to marijuana. The presentation will illustrate how marijuana is trafficked; who is doing it; and the intended and unintended consequences of legalizing it.
